Canada’s new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau headed to Turkey on Friday to attend the G20 Leaders Summit. Ahead of his trip, he told press why he has chosen to accept tens of thousands of refugees fleeing wars in Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq, into Canada. In the few short weeks since he came to power, Trudeau, the son of a famed former Canadian PM, has defied convention, appointing women to half his cabinet positions. Among them is an indigenous woman and an Afghan woman. During his campaign, he promised to withdraw Canada from the US-led fight against the Islamic State. At his first press conference as Prime Minister, Trudeau announced that he had spoken to US President Barack Obama, vowing to keep that pledge.
