Commentary by Mumia Abu Jamal: And Now, Laquan
GUEST: Mumia Abu Jamal, an award winning journalist and political prisoner.
The Chicago Police Superintendent has resigned in the latest news on the police killing of 17-year old Laquan McDonald. A video of the shooting by officer Jason Van Dyke was recently released, a year after the actual killing. Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel asked Superintendent Garry McCarthy for his resignation on Tuesday morning, citing “the undeniable fact that the public trust in the leadership of the department has been shaken and eroded.”
But Mayor Emanuel is not free from guilt either. On Monday, the New York Times published an op-ed that began with the words, “There’s been a cover-up in Chicago.” The paper went to cite the mayor’s reelection campaign as one reason why the video of McDonald’s killing was not made public a year ago, and said, “Mayor Emanuel refused to make the dash-cam video public, going to court to prevent its release.” Officer Jason Van Dyke currently faces first degree murder charges.
We turn today to a political prisoner and award winning journalist Mumia Abu Jamal for a recent commentary he filed on the killing of Laquan McDonald.
