GUEST: Chuck Collins is a senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies and directs the Institute’s Program on Inequality and the Common Good. An expert on U.S. inequality, Collins has authored several books, including ’99 to 1: How Wealth Inequality is Wrecking the World and What We Can Do About It’.

Each year, in September, Forbes Magazine releases its list of the 400 wealthiest people in the US. The magazine describes it as “the definitive list of wealth in America, profiling and ranking the country’s richest billionaires by their estimated net worths.”

While the list is an unabashed celebration of the excesses of capitalism, meant to provide fodder for aspiration, it is also a useful tool for researchers to showcase the obscene wealth inequality that continues to plague the US.
