An Insider’s Perspective of COP21
GUEST: Dr. Hugh Sealy, Professor in the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at St. George’s University in Grenada. The United Nations Development Programme appointed Dr. Sealy as a consultant and asked that he create a guidance manual that provides climate change negotiators in small island developing states with the information and tools to adequately represent their constituencies during international negotiations.
NOTE: This interview was done just hours before the historic Paris accord was signed. While there was a steady stream of parallel activist events taking place outside the COP21 negotiations, inside the conference halls at Le Bourget, on the outskirts of Paris, negotiators representing 190 countries met daily for just over 2 weeks to agree on a climate accord. The proceedings were far more insulated from climate activists at this COP meeting than previous ones. I had the chance to speak with one of the negotiators for small island nations who were among those pushing hardest for a robust deal given that their have the most to lose with rising sea levels from global warming.
