Daniel Holtzclaw was once a police office with the Oklahoma City Police Department. During his time he raped and assaulted many women, mostly African American, ranging in age from 17 to 57. Last month he was convicted on 18 out of 36 counts – four of his convictions were for first-degree rape. On Thursday a jury sentenced him to 263 years in prison, which the presiding judge ordered him to serve consecutively. This means Daniel Holtzclaw will be prison for the rest of his life. To see a one-time police officer being convicted and receive such a harsh sentence is so rare, it is worth discussing in depth.
