Tomorrow is the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, known around the world as “International Human Rights Day.” On December 10th 1948, the United Nations General Assembly, representing the nations of the world, adopted the most far-reaching document enshrining the social and economic rights of all human beings. The anniversary is being marked by governments and social movements across the globe. In some cases, states guilty of violating human rights like the Philippines and here in the US, are commemorating the day. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights technically the law of the land in all member nations of the United Nations. And yet, the struggle to uphold even the most basic of human rights continues in many countries.

In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Amnesty International is organizing the Small Places Tour. As a call to action, musicians across the world are bringing to light human rights abuses across the world. Locally, the Sidebar in Glendale will host a concert tomorrow evening on the last day of the tour. Armenian artists such as the Element Band, Gor, Elon, and KPFK’s own Maria Armoudian will be performing as part of the event to raise awareness and funds. Uprising producer Gabriel San Roman spoke with Maria Armoudian and Ara Dabandjian in-studio yesterday about the Small Places Tour.

GUESTS: Wayne Glass, Professor of International Relations at the University of Southern California, Maria Armoudian, Musician and Host of KPFK’s Insighters program heard Thursdays at 4 p.m., Ara Dabandjian, Musician with the Element Band.

The Small Places Tour is taking place Wednesday, December 10th at the Sidebar located at 1114 N Pacific Ave in Glendale, Ca from 7 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. Reservations are strongly recommended and tickets can be purchased at www.itsmyseat.com or by calling 818.832.1127
