GUEST: Rebecca Traister, writer at large for New York Magazine and a contributing editor at Elle. She has written about women in politics, media, and entertainment from a feminist perspective for the New Republic, Salon, and other publications.

In mid-2015, for the first time, unmarried American adults outnumbered married one. Nearly half of all new births in the US are to unmarried mothers, and the number of couples who are co-habitating but remain unmarried has tripled. A 2010 Pew Research study found that 40% of Americans concluded that the idea of marriage itself was becoming obsolete*.

New York University sociologist Eric Klinenberg told the Christian Science Monitor, that these trends signal the, “greatest social change of the last 60 years that we haven’t already named and identified.”

Today on International Women’s Day, we turn to the phenomenon of unmarried women in particular, and why they are becoming a formidable political force.
