GUEST: Ahilan Arulanantham, deputy legal director at the ACLU of Southern California and senior staff attorney at the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project. He was the ACLU attorney questioning Judge Weil.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) recently released the transcript of a deposition in a case it filed against the federal government over a lack of legal representation of undocumented minors in immigration court. The transcript shows Judge Jack Weil saying, “I’ve taught immigration law literally to 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds. It takes a lot of time. It takes a lot of patience. They get it. It’s not the most efficient, but it can be done.”

The shocking statements that even toddlers don’t need lawyers to represent them underscore the constant violation of the rights of children crossing the US border.
