GUEST: Margaret Zhou, 14 year old student at John W. North High School in Riverside, Lynda Bell, Margaret’s mother

“National History Day,” is an annual one-day history contest for elementary and secondary school students. The theme for this year’s submissions is “Taking a Stand in History: People, Ideas, and Events.” Locally, Margaret Zhou, a freshman at John W. North High School in Riverside, has entered the contest with an individual exhibit titled, “See, Think, Protest: How Students Took a Stand against the Vietnam War.” Zhou’s submission looks at three subject areas; historical context, methods of protest, and public opinion about the war. Her project is based, in part, on interviews with Vietnam Veterans and former student protestors including Students for a Democrat Society founder Tom Hayden. Margaret and her mother Lynda Bell will be heading to the University of Maryland on June 10th for the contest. Margaret Zhou joins us in studio this morning along with her mother, Lynda Bell, a professor of History at University of California at Riverside.
