New School Students End Occupation
| the entire program
Students at the New School, a University in New York, have just ended an occupation of part of the campus, aimed at demanding the resignation of the university president. Bob Kerrey, a former Senator and Governor of Nebraska, has been accused of acting in an undemocratic manner, and putting corporate needs ahead of student needs. Located in Greenwich Village, New York, the New School is a staunchly progressive institution comprising 8 departments that include economics and political science, to film and fashion design. Following an overwhelming vote of no confidence in Kerrey by the school’s faculty, a broad array of students, including those from a coalition calling themselves the Radical Student Union, carried out a sit-in at of the university buildings and declared the university “occupied.” The Radical Student Union includes members from Students for a Democratic Society, Student Environmental Action Coalition and United for Peace and Justice. Despite the student rebellion, President Kerrey has remained firm, with the backing of his board of trustees, and in defense of the school’s Executive Vice President James Murtha, who has been likened to Dick Cheney by students. Joining us to understand exactly who the students are, why they revolted, and what happens next, is…
