“No Hate Radio”
GUEST: Kat Aaron, co-director of Radio Rootz, a radio training program for New York youths that is also a part of the “No Hate Radio,†campaign.
This May, popular New York DeeJay and Clear Channel employee Troi Torain was fired after making a series of racist and violent on-air remarks against a rival DeeJay. In the days following his firing, an alliance of community groups have launched a campaign calling on the FCC to hold “hate radio,†accountable. Torain, who was arrested and is now facing charges, was fired by Clear Channel Communications only after city officials pressured the company. However, the alliance of community groups that comprise the “No Hate Radio,†campaign believe that hate speech on the airwaves extends far beyond the persecution of Torain. Long time critics of Clear Channel claim that the company employs hate radio as a business model in order to increase profits. The campaign is urging the FCC to reject license renewals and expand community radio.
