Voices of TimePacifica Radio Archives, and The Big Buy

As we continue our fund drive, we turn next to the Pacifica Radio Archives – considered by historians and scholars to be one of the oldest and most important audio collections in the world. It houses some of the most important audio moments in the history of the United States, and voices of historical figures like Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr, Cesar Chavez, June Jordan, Lena Horne, Rosa Parks, W.E.B. DuBois, Fannie Lou Hamer, and many more.

Today we want to offer listeners a chance to support KPFK through the Pacifica Radio Archives. For a $50 donation, you can choose any CD from the vast collection of the Archives.

Earlier this month, former House Majority Leader and Texas Republican Tom Delay left Congress amidst a myriad of legal problems. Delay, known as “The Hammer,” for his political style, has been indicted on charges of money laundering and continues to faces questions regarding corruption and his dealings with Jack Abramoff. Delay’s former Deputy Chief of Staff, Tony Rudy, and former Press Secretary, Michael Scanlon, have both pleaded guilty to conspiring with Abramoff to corrupt public officials. Abramoff himself pled guilty to fraud and was sentenced to approximately six years in prison. The growing scandals surrounding Tom Delay forced him to relinquish his bid to reclaim his job as House Majority Leader. That decision was followed by his April 4th announcement that he would not seek re-election. On June 8th, Tom Delay gave a farewell speech to Congress, and claimed that he acted “honorably and honestly,” at all times.

This morning we bring to you an exciting new documentary that Tom Delay has called “worthless,” but I’m sure our listeners will think differently. The documentary is titled, “The Big Buy: Tom Delay’s Stolen Congress,” and is brought to us by Brave New Films, the same distributor that brought us “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price.”
