Analyzing Media Coverage of the Israeli War on Gaza

| the entire program

israelFourteen days into the Israeli offensive on Gaza, the Palestinian death toll continues to rise with no end in sight, even as pressure mounts internationally for a cease-fire. As officials from Israel, Egypt, and France meet to discuss a road-map to a ceasefire, the UN Security Council has come closer to a resolution calling for a ceasefire on both sides. On Wednesday, Israel finally granted “permission” for a three-hour lull in attacks to allow for humanitarian aid and burials in Gaza. During that time, Red Cross representatives commented on the “shocking” scenes they encountered when entering Gaza: images of hungry, emaciated children mourning over the corpse of their mother. A day later, the UN suspended its food aid after one of its truck drivers was killed by an Israeli attack at a border crossing. In the context of the on-going humanitarian crisis, this suspension of food aid could be disastrous. Meanwhile, here in the US, the Senate voted yesterday on a non-binding resolution to “strengthen our historic bond with the state of Israel, by reaffirming Israel’s inalienable right to defend against attacks from Gaza.” Accurate news coverage of the conflict is hard to find in the US mainstream media, and the watchdog group, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, has accused papers like the New York Times of overt pro-Israeli bias.

thanks for having Chris Hedges on; his deep experience in Middle East (and Saravejo) — and speaking Arabic — brings important perspective to the usual ‘snap-shot’ reporting.
However, re Israeli White Phosphorus bombing vs incendiary use, there’s more evidence than Russian video: Surgeons in Gaza hospitals identifying skin burns from WilliePeet, Gazan-based journalists, like Sameh Habeeb report its use, among others (kpfa.org) Also see al-jazeera – English, Ha’aresz, etc. among international press.
    Thanks,
    Linda Wenrick

an addenda: I’m listening to more info on ‘new’ weaponry used by Israel in Gaza (democracynow.org) some of which based on doctors’ reports from recent surgery on Palestinians (amputations): dime bombs & white phosphorus (inhalation injuries & skin burns)
Human Rights Watch is ngo reporting on this. See al jazeera – English for more.
