ozomatliUpland Mayor John Pomierski has promised to put the issue of day laborers gathering outside a local Home Depot on his city council’s agenda. The mayor of this Inland Empire city made his statement after a member of the Minuteman Project from Orange County and a local Upland resident brought it up on Monday’s city council meeting. The mayor and other council members are reportedly interested in a Lake Forest style ordinance that would allow for businesses such as Home Depot to be able call police to remove day laborers as “loiterers.” Such repressive ordinances have been a major focus of groups like the National Day Laborer Organizing Network. Founded in 2001, the group has committed itself to using various means of defending the rights of day laborers. To benefit NDLON’s new media research project “Jornaleras Presente,” and Cimarron Productions’ independent community center for communications, a fund raising concert is being held tonight at the Echoplex. The Grammy award winning band Ozomatli will be headlining the event performing alongside bands like Little Bastards and Wait-Think-Fast.
