Israeli Assault on Lebanon Continues

Israel assaults LebanonGUESTS: Rania Masri, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Balamand (Lebanon) and the assistant director of the Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Balamand.

The Israeli assault on Lebanon continues in its sixth day in full force with more than 150 mostly civilians being killed. Israel’s “Operation Just Reward” is apparently in retaliation for two soldiers captured by Hezbollah. However, most analysts conclude that the current offensive was planned in advance. Lebanese PM Fouad Siniora declared Lebanon a “disaster zone” on Saturday and called upon the international community for a cease-fire and help to stop the Israel. Apparently Israeli ground forces entered southern Lebanon although Israeli officials said this was not the start of an large-scale invasion. They said that Israeli troops had crossed the Lebanese border back and forth in recent days. Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and British Prime Minister Tony Blair have called for an international force to be sent to Lebanon. However this force would be sent, not to stop Israel, rather to stop rockets from hitting Israel to “give Israel a reason to stop its attacks on Hezbollah.” Israeli forces have also continued their assault on the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian foreign ministry building in Gaza City was hit for the second time in a week and largely destroyed.
