Stop CAFTAGUEST: Andrew de Sousa, Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala

One year after the US House of Representatives narrowly passed the Central American Free trade Agreement, or CAFTA, grassroots activists are calling for trade with justice. The Stop CAFTA Coalition has drafted a pledge for trade justice, and is demanding that candidates running for office in the upcoming November elections adhere to the pledge if elected. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the trade agreement by only two votes last year. Critics assail CAFTA for decreasing exports, eroding environmental standards and rolling back workers rights in Central American nations that signed on to the deal. These include El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Guatemala. CAFTA most recently went into effect in Guatemala on July 1st, 2006. It has yet to be implemented in Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.
