GUEST: Maricela Guzman, Iraq Veterans Against the War
Since July 1st, Iraq Veterans Against the War has been volunteering their efforts to help rebuild devastated areas of Louisiana. Nearly one year after the Gulf Coast was battered by Hurricane Katrina, much work has yet to be done and many families have yet to return to their homes. Joining with local relief organizations such as Bayou Liberty Relief and Common Ground, volunteers have been active in rebuilding homes, clearing debris and abating mold. The volunteer effort follows an earlier march this past Spring by the group from Mobile, Alabama to New Orleans, Louisiana on the third anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. Both the summer reconstruction effort and the march draw attention to the parallels and connections between the war on Iraq and the inadequate government response to Hurricane Katrina. Today we continue our on-going coverage in the lead-up to the one-year anniversary of the tragedy of Hurrican Katrina with an interview with Maricela Guzman of IVAW, live from New Orleans.
