The Wall Street Journal published an article this week on the successful organizing efforts of day laborers in Agoura Hills, outside Los Angeles. About 120 workers decided among themselves to only accept work for a minimum hourly wage of $15, which is about $2.50 higher than the previous, informal rate. Meanwhile, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, which supervised the workers’ vote, is teaming up with the Laborers’ International Union to have a press conference tomorrow on their on-going efforts to help California day laborers organize to improve their lives. This Friday the Pasadena Community Job Center celebrates its fifth anniversary. The job center, dedicated to day laboreres, is a program of IDEPSCA, the Institute of Popular Education of Southern California.

Why is “society” so often blamed for the problems of so many people? Then the next thing said is that there needs to be a “program” to help people.

I don’t mean to say that “programs” are a bad thing, and in some cases they are needed. But if an individual is not successful after going through a program, then it becomes very easy to blame the program and not themselves.
In addition to “programs” we need individuals to make a greater committment to themselves and to society so that they take additional personal responsibility.
I was a day laborer organizer, or site coordinator at a job center, and I support these programs 100%, they promote civic participation, citizenship and introduce the informal immigrant working class to American customs. Anyone who feels different is biased against poor people and anti-immigrant for the sake of being so. Analyze before you criticize.
