Campaign for a Moratorium on Condo Conversions

As affordable apartment buildings in and around Los Angeles continue to be demolished and converted into pricey condominiums, tenant activists, many facing evictions, are calling for a moratorium. By pressuring the Los Angeles City Council to implement a freeze on condo conversions, activists say that proposals can be developed in the meantime to protect renters and affordable housing. Critics of the condo conversion trend say that it displaces residents out of affordable housing and sometimes out of the state of California. According to the Los Angeles Housing Department, over 11,000 condo and demolition related evictions have taken place in the last five years. Two Los Angeles City Council Members, Alex Padilla and Bill Rosendahl, have already called for freezes on all conversions in their respective districts. Such restrictions would require approval from the City Council.

This was a most informative and helpful broadcast. I thought I was alone in my concerns that my old apt. building will be demolished so that expensive condos can go up in its place. I feel it’s just a matter of time, and I’m worried. I didn’t know about CES. I went to the site and have contacted my City Councilmember on this issue. It’s good to know we can rally and fight for a freeze on this rampant effort to rid our City of affordable apartments.
It goes beyond affordable housing and into respect for the existing tenants. When an entity buys an older apartment building with the intention to convert it to condos, they have no intention on maintaining the existing conditions of the tenants living conditions and the stress begins there. Tenants continue to pay rent while services begin to break down and and go away. Such poor treatment of humans reflects on the developers side and causes bitterness and diminishes the living conditions of the existing tenants. Greed for money becomes so obvious on the side of the developer. What is a lone citizen to do against the capitol rich developer? Get out of his way or you will suffer. Or, get prepared and fight for what is your RIGHT.
