Life in the New WorldGUEST: Maria Armoudian, musician, journalist, Environmental commissioner

KPFK programmer, Maria Armoudian’s recently released album, “Life in the New World,” is an original collection of politically conscious songs. Displaying a wide-range of influences by blending world music with rock and new age, she hopes to reach otherwise apolitical listeners on a visceral level with her music. Born to immigrant parents who settled in Weatherford, Oklahoma, Armoudian eventually moved west to Los Angeles to pursue her interests and talents in music. For a while, however, music took a back seat to political activism as she delved in the world of non-profits and political organizations. The emotional ups and downs of political life, ironically enough, inspired Armoudian to return to music with “Life in the New World.” In addition to being a singer/songwriter, Maria Armoudian is a journalist and radio host of “the Insighters,” heard every Thursday at 4 pm right here at KPFK. She also serves as a Commissioner for the City of Los Angeles Environmental Affairs Commission, and is a Ph.D. candidate at USC. As a print journalist, her articles have appeared in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and the Progressive.
