Will the Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Hold?
GUESTS: James Abourezk, Lebanese American lawyer and former US Senator
An Israeli soldier was killed and three others wounded in southern Lebanon earlier today when their tank drove over a land mine. It was the first official Israeli casualty since an August 14th cease-fire agreement between Israel and Lebanon. Israel has already violated the ceasefire several times. Under the U.N.-brokered agreement, Lebanon will deploy 15,000 soldiers in the south to establish a government force in the region for the first time in four decades. Meanwhile hundreds of Israeli troops have remained in Lebanon effectively maintaining an air and sea blockade. Israel says it is waiting for a U.N. peacekeeping force to move into Lebanon and guarantee a buffer zone between Israel and Hezbollah. The European Union is expected to lead the peacekeepers, but troop deployments are facing resistance among Europeans. Meanwhile, about 200,000 Lebanese refugees who fled to Syria have been returning to their homes, or what’s left of them, since the ceasefire began.
