nursesGUEST: Ross Eisenbray, Vice President and Policy Director at the Economic Policy Institute, co-author of a report, “Supervisor in Name Only”

The National Labor Relations Board will be making a ruling in several cases soon, which could have repercussions for millions of workers. The NLRB’s desicion in the so-called “Kentucky River” cases could broaden the definition of a ‘supervisor’ and make it illegal to organize certain employees in a range of industries including health care, building trades, broadcasting and port shipping. In effect they could decide to make it easier for companies to declare certain workers supervisors, thus making them ineligible for union membership. Previous rulings from the board on the same issue were made at a time when the appointees were Democratic, and decided to side with unions by declaring such employees nonsupervisory. The current Republican dominated board, with all five members appointed by George W. Bush, has hinted it may see things differently.
