Ochre & Onyx: The Langston Hughes Project
“Ochre & Onyx: The Langston Hughes Project,” is the latest presentation by the Watts Village Theater Company. Produced by Guillermo Aviles-Rodriguez and Damion Teeko Parran, the play explores the significance of one of the most revered poets of the Harlem Renaissance through the past and present. In “Ochre & Onyx,” an African-American slam poet and an Afro Latina painter contemplate Hughes’ legacy and soul in contemporary times while the literary figure’s time in Mexico during the 1920’s is recreated. During Langston Hughes’ high school years, his father, who was living in Toluca, Mexico, reentered his life. After graduation, Hughes returned to live with his father in Mexico but tensions grew over his aspirations to study poetry at Columbia University. The worlds of time and culture parallel in a story that fits well within the Watts Village Theater Company’s mission of inspiring positive social change through innovative theatrical work.
