GUEST: Peter Camejo, Green Party Gubernatorial candidate in California, author of “California: Under Corporate Rule”

Santos Reyes, an undocumented Mexican immigrant, is currently serving a twenty-six years to life prison sentence in Folsom Prison for placing a false name on a driver’s license test. The California Vehicle code classifies as a misdemeanor offense ‘using a false or fictitious name or knowingly concealing any material fact in any document filed with the Department of Motor Vehicles.’ However, the prosecutor in Reyes’ case charged him with felony perjury. Since Santos Reyes had two previous felony “strikes,” against him, he was convicted of a third strike, and, under California’s Three Strikes law, is serving a twenty-six years to life prison sentence. Reyes’ case has galvanized many activists to call for his release. After corresponding with Reyes, Green Party gubernatorial candidate Peter Camejo has organized a campaign to free him and overturn California’s three strikes law. The National Latino Congreso has also recently issued a resolution calling on Governor Schwarzenegger to free Santos Reyes. The Ninth Circuit Federal Court of Appeals has granted Santos Reyes a hearing to determine whether his offense warranted a three strikes conviction.

There will be a rally and vigil to free Santos Reyes on Wednesday September 13th, at 9:30 am in front of the US District Court, 312 N. Spring Street (at West Temple) in Los Angeles, CA.
