FCC Hearing in LA
| the entire program
GUESTS: Ben Bagdikian, award winning author, journalist and media critic, Amanda Valentine, Free Press
On Oct. 3 in Los Angeles, all five Federal Communications Commissioners will meet face-to-face with the public to discuss sweeping changes to the nation’s media ownership rules. The hearing is the first part of another effort to rewrite ownership rules that could create greater monopolies in the country’s media landscape. The FCC’s last battle over media ownership drew a record outpouring of public comments to the agency.
Ben Bagdikian’s ground breaking book “The Media Monopoly” published in 1983, has served as a bible for students of media-industry concentration. In it, he predicted that a small handful of media corporations would own the majority of our media outlets. That prediction has come dangerously true. The seventh edition of the book, “The New Media Monopoly” was published two years ago.
