GUESTS: Deborah Scranton, Director of “War Tapes,” Zack Bazzi, one of the three National Guardsmen who filmed “War Tapes”

The War Tapes is a new documentary about the war in Iraq – the first to be filmed by soldiers themselves. Three national guardsmen, Sergeant Steve Pink, Sergeant Zack Bazzi, and Specialist Mike Moriarty chose to film their experiences in Iraq with Director Deborah Scranton, directing them long distance via the internet. Chris Hedges, author of the bestselling book, “War is a Force that Gives us Meaning,” has said of The War Taped: “A film of rare honesty and power that exposes, from the eyes of those who fight the war, the revolting and soul-numbing world of combat.” One of the three men, Specialist Moriarty, describes himself as deeply patriotic – but all three understand, like most other soldiers on the front lines, that the war is about making money for Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR), a subsidiary of Dick Cheney’s Halliburton Corporation. There is rampant racism against Arabs, frank discussions about the whether the war was fought for oil, and ultimately, a struggle with the scars that war leaves on all those who serve.

The War Tapes will be showing at the Landmark Nuart Theater, 1314 Wilshire Boulevard at Euclid, Santa Monica, CA 90403, starting October 13.
