KPFK Fund Drive – Day 15

woodstockWoodstock: Three Days of Peace and Music

Forty years ago this August, an estimated 3-500,000 people gathered in New York State for the Woodstock Music Festival. Dubbed as the biggest rock concert of its time, Woodstock showcased the best performers of “rock, folk, and progressive popular music” of the sixties and came to epitomize the 60’s hippie culture of “sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll.” We just heard the voice of Max Yasgur, the farmer whose field the festival was held on. Alongside the nearly half million attendees, were a film crew with a monumental task of capturing the music and atmosphere on film. Michael Wadleigh’s epic documentary, Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music, released a year after the August 1969 event, captured an Oscar for best Documentary and broke new ground in the documentary genre. Just last week, the director’s cut of the film was released as part of a limited release 40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition. The 3 DVD set includes “Over 3 hours of Bonus Content Including Never-Before-Seen Performances” and features music by: Richie Havens, Joan Baez, The Who, Sha-Na-Na, Joe Cocker, Grateful Dead, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Sly and the Family Stone and many more.

Special Guest: Ric Allan, co-host of Digital Village, heard Saturday mornings at 10 am on KPFK. Ric Allan went to Woodstock at age 14.

Would you like to consider, in your celebration of Woodstock, including references to the biography, I Want to Take You Higher: The Life and Times of Sly & the Family Stone (Backbeat Books, 2008), or even to consider offering copies as a premium? Woodstock is of course referenced therein. I have personal motivation to inquire: I’m the author.
