Casa De Sousa Faces Eviction from Historic Olvera Street
A popular vegan/vegetarian-friendly Mexican café and art gallery on historic Olvera Street in downtown los angeles recently received notice of eviction. Casa De Sousa, famous for its coffee and chocolate, has been on LA’s oldest street for more than 60 years and the Sousa family has a history in the founding of the street that attracts thousands of tourists and locals each year. Benjamin Antonio Sousa, returned from WWII to become assistant manager of Olvera Street in the 60s but the family’s presence goes back to the 1930s. Now Casa de Sousa is being threatened by the city itself. Several other Olvera Street Merchants have already lost their leases.
GUESTS: Conchita Sousa is the operating owner of Casa de Sousa and her partner Fernando Cruz who also helps run the space.
