Back in the day on August 18th, 1969, Jimi Hendrix brought the historic counter-culture music festival known as “Woodstock” to a close. Exactly forty years ago, ‘the biggest rock concert of its time’ extended past its schedule into the early Monday morning hours. Those who stayed until the end witnessed one of the most prolific guitarists in rock music history turn in a two-hour set unforgettably symbolized by his distorted rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner.” The performance capped a weekend in which as many as half a million people gathered at a farm field in Bethel, New York to see an extensive lineup featuring some of the best rock, folk, and progressive popular music of the sixties. Hendrix was joined by the likes of The Who, Janis Joplin, Carlos Santana, and the Grateful Dead. Forty years later, the weekend of peace and music known as Woodstock has come to embody social and political culture of the sixties.
Looking back at this anniversary, rest assured concert goers will be having ‘flashbacks’ of one sort or another…
