The 78th Annual Academy Awards will take place this Sunday, March 5th. Among the many major award categories are numerous progressive films in contention. In the Best Picture category, “Good Night and Good Luck,†“Crash,†and “Brokeback Mountain,†are all nominated for the night’s highest award. In the foreign film category, “Paradise Now,†a film that explores the internal struggles of two men recruited to be suicide bombers, is the first Palestinian production to have ever been nominated for an Academy Award. The Best Documentary category features selections such as “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room†and “Darwin’s Nightmare,†a harrowing look at the effects of globalization in the African nation of Tanzania. On Uprising, we’ve interviewed the Academy Award nominated directors of both “Paradise Now,†and “Darwin’s Nightmare,†and we’d like to bring you excerpts of those interviews. Also, on the line to speak about the progressive pictures up for Oscars this Sunday is Ed Rampell, The People’s Film Historian, and author of “Progressive Hollywood, A People’s Film History of the United States.†He will have an Op-ed in this Sunday’s Daily News about the Oscar Awards.
