Gandhi’s Legacy and Bush in India

GUEST: Arun Gandhi, Co-founder of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, Gandhi’s grandson

GandhiPresident Bush and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh struck a nuclear deal during Bush’s visit to India. The deal could transform relations between the two countries. For the US to acknowledge India’s status as a nuclear military power, is a reversal of three decades of US policy. The nuclear deal has to be ratified by the US Congress. A spokesman for one of the socialist parties in the Indian government said of the agreement: “Today is one of the most shameful days in the history of independent India.” A 2005 poll found that about 54 percent of Indians said they had confidence that Bush would generally do the right things in world affairs, well above the confidence levels in Europe. But tens of thousands are protesting Bush’s visit, as well as his act of placing a wreath at the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi.

Darfur: Eyewitness to Genocide

GUEST: Former Marine Captain Brian Steidle, the U.S. representative to the African Union’s peacekeeping mission in Darfur, Sudan

Brian Steidle600 Nigerian troops are being airlifted to Darfur, Sudan, to bolster peace keeping operations. The move is part of the growing international pressure to help end the deadly conflicts that has claimed over 300,000 lives in the region. Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, has asked the United States to provide air support for the several thousand African Union peacekeeping troops that are already there. Members of the Bush administration have openly admitted that the civilian killing in Darfur amounts to a genocide. To date, the US has done little in practical terms to stop it. Meanwhile Darfur has all but dropped out of the sights of the news media.

My guest is Brian Steidle, a former Marine captain, who went to Darfur in September 2004 as one of three U.S. military representatives to the African Union’s peacekeeping mission. His role was to report violations of a cease-fire between the Arab militia and African tribes that had been declared in April 2003.
