The Truth Behind the War

Separate bomb attacks in Iraq claimed the lives of at least 58 people, and left 89 wounded yesterday. Officials say one set of twin suicide bombings in Baiji targeted local police chiefs and public employees. Two women were killed yesterday in a separate incident in Iraq, when the private security firm Unity Resources Group opened fire on a car carrying four civilians. The high-profile incident follows a Congressional investigation into Blackwater surrounding the company’s actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Violence continues as US-led military operations and foreign private companies continue to be deployed to the region – and the stories and images from the attacks and devastation are systematically sanitized in local newsrooms and on Capitol Hill. And while independent minded people around the country seek solutions out of Iraq, mainstream media avoids the grim realities of war. Bush and Blair used manipulated intelligence to with a complacent, post 9-11 media to garner support for an attack on Iraq, and four and a half years later, independent journalists continue to deal with the frustrations of risking their lives to tell the tales behind the war.
